Chapter 8: Coming to Terms

Dawn came quietly and Alura was already relaxing in an early morning warm bath. She slid her back down the smooth ceramic surface to sink down into the water so it gently rested at her chin. Her mind was swimming with the visuals she read in the book as well as what the old demon had said to them last night. I can’t deny it anymore. She released a breath which made the steamy water ripple out away from her breath. Synto has to be Nate and the Nephilim named Sophia has to be human Sophia. Yet I feel a need to deny this. Her eyes slowly dropped half way as she watched a drop of water fall from the faucet. “…but why do I want to deny it? Is it fear or something else?” she inquired to herself in a soft voice that barely left her lips, her eyes fully closing.

As she pondered things Marenzo was enjoying his dream of a possible future with Alura along with their part of Aphelia being without Amoxious. It wasn’t until the early morning sun began to raise high enough to shine in through the window with cracked drapes, striking him in the face which caused him to groan in protest while he covered his head with the blankets. A minute later he peeked out with a glare at the bright yellow warm light. “You have bad timing. I was having a great dream.” He grumbled to the unlistening celestial body.

He stretched with a yawn and sighed as he let his body go limp in the bed with his eyes closing again. One eye opened to see Alura’s bed empty and neatly made. Hmm…wonder where she went off to… he used a bit of magic and as he heard the sound of water from behind the bathroom door, he also picked up on her worried thoughts. Taking a deep breath, he released it as he sat up and turned while standing in one motion. He made his way over to her bed, sat down and used his magic to undo her bag, levitate the book up to him and he began to read while she was busy. He wanted to see for himself what had her mind so bummed.

Minutes later as Alura was getting out of the tub, Marenzo had closed the book with a serious expression on his face. Given that last page, I doubt there’s much more tragic events to be learned but, at the same time, fate can be a real bitch when its least expected. He thought in a low tone. I hope she can find some good news in Lunar instead of more sadness. He tilted his head back to look at the ceiling. “It’s almost as if a playwright had made a script for those two, giving first a war with happiness before the lost.”

He put the book away and reclosed her bag before standing, making his way to the bathroom door and knocked. This caused Alura to jump and to quickly hold the towel up, closed firmly around her. “Who is it?” she squeaked before clearing her throat to ask again with a more level voice.

“It’s Marenzo and I’m wondering if you’re almost done in there since I gotta get ready to before we check the schedule at the docking port.”

“Right, almost done!” she called and proceeded to dry off and get dressed in the steamy room. She got dressed and before getting her shirt on began to rub her hair with another towel to get it as dry as she could. With it now frizzed out and looking as if a whirlwind hit it, she got her shirt on and made her way out into the main room. “Okay, all yours.” She chimed with a chipper morning attitude.

“Finally!” he exclaimed moving to the bathroom and used a bit of wind to clear the steam as well as drying the moisture off the fixtures, walls, ceiling, and floor. “Why do women always team up a room like this? It’s not very good to keep out mold formation if you don’t vent the steam out.”

Alura huffed as she put a hand on her hip. “You do know steam is good for cleaning out your pores?”

“It is?” he questioned and turned his gaze up while rubbing his chain. “Hmm, well, I don’t think it worked.” This confused her as he looked to her once more. “You still look like you.” He flashed a grin, stuck his tongue out and quickly darted behind the door while he closed it. This was done just in time for one pair of her rolled up socks to smack into the wooden structure with a soft ‘thump’ before landing on the floor silently.

She sighed making her way over then fell backwards onto the bed. She closed her eyes and began to doze off. She drifted into a light slumber with dreams of her parents meeting, their struggle, and when they had happiness, letting their eldest go to another island only to return years later for a violent end to all in the family. What shall you have me do? A woman’s calm voice asked with an echo inside Alura’s mind.

Erase their memories if they decide they want to resume life. Erase my own so I might also forget. A man’s echoing voice requested sadly.

That I will do but the one who must remember shall always remember this dark day, forever living with the knowledge of the unspoken they brought to others not in the know. Forever forgotten shall you be from her and a new start shall be granted this only time. Life shall not be restarted without rebirth the next we meet. The woman’s echoing voice responded.

A tear ran down the side of Alura’s face from her closed eyes as Marenzo exited the bathroom, drying off his hair. “…I love you…” she whispered softly which caught him by surprise. He shook it off as he didn’t want to pry as he stepped across the room to her and gently reached down, softly shaking her to stir her awake.

“Hey, you can’t go back to sleep now. We gotta go check into when the airship leaves for Lunar. Remember?” he asked with a lighthearted chuckle.

Alura opened her eyes with a groan and, as she sat up, wiped the tearstain from her face. “Right, let’s get going then.” Quickly she slipped her socks on as he teleported her thrown socks back into her bag, and got her shoes on. He also went to his bed, sat and did the same. They went downstairs, paid the keeper and took their leave after expressing how nice their stay had been.

A minute or so passed by after they exited that Rose entered the establishment with her two friends staying outside to wait. She sauntered up with hips swaying in her long beautiful fuchsia colored, low cut, short sleeved dress. Her hair was in waves with the sides pulled up in an elegant fashion. “Excuse me, good sir, but do you know if a young couple has checked out?” she inquired sweetly with a batting of her full eyelashes.

“I see a lot of young couples come and go from here, especially if it’s honeymoon season.” He answered while marking in his book the room needed changed to be ready for renting.

“Oh I’m sure you know who I’m speaking of.” She purred as she leaned forwards, folding her arms on the counter so they framed her cleavage while she rested her bust on the counter.

The keep looked to her chest with a light blush striking his cheeks before he cleared his throat while he yanked his gaze from her assets, looking up to meet her actual eyes. “I can’t seem to recall who you might be asking about. My memory is very hazy at the moment for some reason.” He wooed at the same time as a hand came up to hold his head with his eyes closing as to appear he did feel woozy.

Rose narrowed her sights then smirked as she elegantly reached into her cleavage and pulled out a small bag that held a few coins. She shook it which immediately gained the keeps attention. “Does this refresh your knowledge about a wizard traveling with a commoner wench?”

“They left just a bit ago, headed to check a schedule.” He reported as he took the bag and was shocked then delighted as he carefully stashed the four coins, each worth one-hundred thousand Relu, into his pocket as he returned her the bag.

She took it and replaced it into its hiding spot. “Did they say where they were going?”

He looked up, rubbing his chin in thought. “Hmm…I’m not sure. That part of my memory is still a bit foggy.”

Rose lightly chuckled, reaching into the side down her dress and pulled out a unique coin between her pointer and middle finger with her well-manicured nails. “Perhaps another little piece shall help clear away that fog.” She cooed seductively.

“I think it can.” He responded softly with his eyes widening at the sight, his eyes following it as she bent her wrist to move the coin left and right in front of him. “They said they were going to head to Lunar and check to see what ship would be headed out first.” He answered before reaching for the coin only to miss as she moved it out of reach. She smirked at his displeased frown and his annoyed grunt when he had missed.

“Now, now, I need assurance your lips will stay sealed about our little discussion. Daddy would just hate for anything ill to happen to his darling little angel.” Her voice became softer and held a bit of a pouty tone to it. “I would also hate to see your fine business shut down because daddy’s little girl became unhappy.”

The keep nodded and put away the new payment. “Of course and I’m so sorry we don’t have a room for you today. Thank you for checking.”

She nodded as she stepped back while pushing off from the counter. “Thank you for checking~” she purred as she turned and walked out the door with her hips swaying and her matching heels tapping on the wooden floor.

Gilia fixed her shoulder length brown hair back some as they saw their leader come out of the tavern. “So?” she questioned as a hand came to rest on her hip.

“They’re headed to Lunar.”

“How you plan we get there then?” inquired Tina as she blew a few blond bangs out of her face. “I doubt your father will allow you or ours us to leave with you just so you can chase after that man and make him your personal bitch.”

This statement made Rose laugh. “Oh, you forget though that money says everything and daddy likes his little girl happy.” She looked confidently to the pair. “So I’m sure that it will be no problem once daddy takes care of the arrangements.” They shared a laugh while discussing over plans for how they would get to the wizard, as they followed Rose to her main home so to get the arrangements made.

The duo found the first ship to Lunar was leaving in an hour so to pass the time they took another look around the city near the airship docks. Once the hour was up and all travelers heading to the island of moons, the captain made the last checks before boarding and the engines started. They took to the air and were off with Marenzo and Alura below deck as the three women were in a higher class cabin on the deck.

Into the night as some were enjoying the stars and others going to bed, Rose made her way out of her cabin to look around. She approached and came to stand beside a man looking in his forties to early fifties wearing a traveler’s cloak. She eyed him over with her back pressed again one of the beams along the railing. “Hehe, hello there stranger,” she greeted and got a grunt as a response. “Might I take it right that you are a merchant?” he nodded silently while looking over his travel log book. “Judging by your stature you must be a very fine one at that.”

Finally he closed his book and eyed her over which brought his serious expression to turn one of interest. “You do know a good one when you spot’em. So,” he shifted to put the book away, “what is it you be looking for little miss?”

She adjusted her stance as she slipped with a turn to lean forwards on the railing. “I did hear a small rumor you have items on you for sale that take a while to be made. Would I be correct with these rumors?”

He nodded while enjoying the sight. “You did hear right. What are you looking for and how much are you willing to pay?” he questioned then added, “and how do you plan to pay?” he had a bit of a purr to his hushed tone as well as a small chuckle, thinking she was offering him a one night stand.

“I just need something portable that can knock out a wizard for long enough that I can get what I want.”

“Hmm…” he thought over his inventory on him then nodded. “I would have something but the article of payment hasn’t be answered.”

Rose elegantly bent over, lifting her dress some as she reached up her leg to taunt his senses before her hand vanished under the fabric. She noted the look as he followed the fabric up to see her upper thigh and soon her hand came out after pulling a blade out from under a leather strap. She stood upright with a bit of a wave motion of her body as the fabric fell back down to around her ankles. “This will be the payment for the item I seek.” She whispered with a steamy tone.

The merchant raised an eyebrow at her and took the blade, keeping his cloak closed enough to hide the fact she had gotten the response from his body she wanted to cause. He looked the blade over, removing it from its sheath and sniffed it. “Ah, I see you have connections. These aren’t sold on the open market.” This comment made her smirk with pride. “I suppose this will be a fair trade.” He reached into his cloak to store the weapon and started to pull out a normal looking ring. “What kind of wizard are you aiming to target with this?”

“A human wizard,” she responded as she folded her arms, “I doubt he’s all that powerful.” He nodded and handed her the ring. She took it and looked the average looking accessory. “You aren’t ripping me off are you?”

He shook his head. “Nope, that was hand crafted and if you press in on the sides it will push out a small needle. One prick will be enough to daze a human for roughly a minute or two.” She nodded as she tried it on. “It has a use up to three times before it uses up the mixture inside the round surface.”

“Sounds like a good deal.” She expressed pleased and tested it by pressing on the sides after turning the ring upside down. She was pleased to see a small round needle that resembled a thorn off a flower.

“Well it was a pleasure to do business with you. Can I get your name?”

She looked up to him from the ring as she brought in the point and nodded, motioning him closer. He leaned in and she softly stroked along his neck as she began to whisper with moist breath. “My name is,” she noticed his body shiver and just as she took a breath to speak it was when she brought the other hand up and quickly pricked him through his cloak to his neck.

He fell back with a stumble due to a strong sudden rush that felt like a hangover. She stepped back and swiftly made her way back to her cabin, giving a cute little wave with wiggling her fingers. “Bye dear sir~” she sang sweetly with a giggle and she was gone. When he recovered enough he couldn’t remember where she went due to his then distorted vision. He sighed and rubbed his head embarrassed then went to retire in his own cabin to relax during the trip.
